Benha University’s data on Sustainable Development Goal 9 (SDG 9) related to “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” showed that the university achieved outstanding research performance during the period from 2020 until July 1, 2026, with a total of 520 published research papers, which garnered 10,532 scientific citations with an average of 20.3 citations per paper, while the research recorded an average global research impact (FWCI) of 1.92.
The data revealed that 248 research projects received funding, while 200 projects demonstrated technological readiness and applicability (TRL ≥ 4). This reflects the university's focus on promoting applied innovation and aligning scientific research with industry needs.
Statistics confirmed that 41% of all published research represents a promising foundation for industrial application, reinforcing the university's role in supporting a knowledge-based economy and transforming research outputs into practical solutions that serve productive sectors.
Scientific publishing has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, with the number of research papers increasing from 38 in 2020 to 125 in 2025, representing a total growth of 229% during the same period. As of July 1, 2026, 73 research papers had been published.
Materials engineering topped the list of research fields with 106 papers, followed by agriculture and food security with 66, electrical power systems and control systems with 46, water resources management with 36, and artificial intelligence and advanced digital technologies with 31. These fields collectively represent 58.4% of the total research output related to Sustainable Development Goal 9.
Data also showed that the fields most ready for industrial application are materials engineering (64 research papers), followed by agriculture and food security (26 papers), water resources management (22 papers), electrical power and control systems (17 papers), and renewable and sustainable energy systems (10 papers).
To strengthen its partnership with the industrial sector, the university identified several promising opportunities for collaboration in industrial digital transformation, agriculture and food security, smart manufacturing, environmental and climate sustainability, and water and pollution treatment.
The university also recorded 251 research papers that exceeded the global research impact factor (FWCI), representing 48.3% of its total research output. In addition, 14 patent families cited the university's research, and 11 patents cited the university's research. Furthermore, the university has two specialized incubators to support innovation and entrepreneurship: the Benha University Biotechnology Incubator and the Benha University Medical and Laboratory Equipment Incubator.
These indicators confirm the growing role of Benha University as a leading academic institution in supporting industrial innovation and achieving sustainable development goals, by directing scientific research towards areas with a direct economic and social impact.
Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy, President of Benha University, announced that the university has been ranked in the category of (301–400) globally in the overall ranking among (1,603) universities evaluated for the 2026 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.
This ranking measures the contribution of higher education institutions to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local, regional, and international levels.
Prof. El-Gizawy explained that this achievement reflects the university's efforts in supporting sustainability and enhancing its role in community service, directing its educational and research activities towards addressing developmental challenges in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, thus enhancing its position at both regional and international levels. He added that the ranking methodology relies on several indicators across three areas:
• Published scientific research over the past five years in global scientific journals from Elsevier,
• Awareness activities,
• Management and supervision of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Prof. Gehan Abdel-Hady, Vice President for postgraduate Studies and Research, pointed out that the university has achieved outstanding results in several Sustainable Development Goals that the ranking is based on. The university ranked in the category of (101–200) globally in the goal of eradicating hunger among (731) universities worldwide, and it is among the top three universities at the local level. It achieved (101–200) globally among (892) universities in the goal of affordable and clean energy, ranking among the top five universities locally. Furthermore, it received (201–300) globally among (826) for the goal of industry, innovation, and infrastructure, ranking second in Egypt. The university also ranked (401–600) globally among (1,603) for achieving the goal of partnerships for the goals, placing it among the top five universities in Egypt.
